Eight years after a 36-second teaser, Bethesda has finally said something new about The Elder Scrolls VI. In a 40th-anniversary video narrated by studio head Todd Howard, the company revealed the game’s title, The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel, and confirmed the setting fans have guessed since 2018: the desert province of Hammerfell. Here is what was shown, what it means, and what is still unknown, including the release date.
What Bethesda revealed
The reveal came at the end of the anniversary video. A roughly one-minute clip of blowing desert sand resolves into the Sentinel logo, followed by a cryptic line attributed to “Yazar, Moth Priest of the High Queen Iradne of Hammerfell,” dated five years after the events of Skyrim. There was no gameplay, no characters and no cinematic beyond the sand and the logo.
Why Sentinel and Hammerfell matter
Sentinel is the capital and largest city of Hammerfell, the homeland of the Redguards on Tamriel’s western coast. The province has appeared in earlier games (it was part of Daggerfall in 1996 and briefly in Elder Scrolls Online) but has never been the main setting of a mainline title. Expect deserts, coastal cities, the Alik’r sands and the political fallout of the Great War, which Skyrim’s lore left unresolved in Hammerfell.
The “High Queen Iradne” name is new to the series, suggesting the game picks up a changed political order after Skyrim.
Release date: still nothing
Bethesda did not give a release date, window or year. Industry expectations before the reveal pointed to 2028 or later, since Starfield shipped in 2023 and the studio said Elder Scrolls VI entered full production after it. Treat any specific date you see online as speculation until Bethesda or Xbox announce one.
Platforms
Bethesda is owned by Microsoft, so Xbox Series X|S and PC are expected. Microsoft has released some recent first-party titles on PlayStation 5 as well, and has not said whether Sentinel will follow. No platform list was published with the teaser.

What it means for you
If you were hoping to play Elder Scrolls VI soon, this reveal does not change the timeline; it confirms the game exists and where it is set. In the meantime, Skyrim and the Elder Scrolls Online Hammerfell zones are the way to see the region. The reveal pushed “Skyrim,” “Hammerfell” and “Elder Scrolls” into the top U.S. trending searches this week, and Bethesda’s bigger 2026 release calendar still centers on Starfield updates and Fallout.
