Veterans Day 2026 is Wednesday, Nov. 11. It is a federal holiday, but not everything shuts down: the stock market trades a normal session while the bond market, banks and the Postal Service take the day off. Here is the full list of what is open and closed.
Stock market: open
The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq are open regular hours, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET, on Veterans Day. The exchanges observe nine holidays a year and Veterans Day is not one of them. Trading volume is often lighter because the bond market is closed.
Bond market: closed
SIFMA, the industry group that sets the fixed-income calendar, recommends a full close of U.S. bond markets on Veterans Day. Treasury auctions scheduled for that week are moved, and money-market settlement shifts to Nov. 12. If you trade Treasuries or bond ETFs, the ETF shares trade on the stock exchange but the underlying bond prices will not update.
Banks and the Federal Reserve: closed
Veterans Day is a Federal Reserve Bank holiday, so most bank branches are closed and ACH transfers, direct deposits and wires do not process. Deposits due on Nov. 11 typically arrive on Nov. 10 or Nov. 12, depending on the employer. Online banking, ATMs and card payments work as usual. Some credit unions and a few banks stay open; check your bank’s holiday page.
Mail and deliveries
- USPS: no regular mail delivery and post offices are closed. Priority Mail Express is still delivered.
- UPS and FedEx: normal pickup and delivery, though UPS SurePost and FedEx services that hand off to USPS are delayed a day.
- Amazon: deliveries continue.
Government, schools, trash
Federal offices, courts, the Social Security Administration, the IRS and DMVs in most states are closed. Public schools vary; many districts close, some do not. Trash and recycling schedules depend on your city; many municipal services run normally because the holiday falls midweek.
Stores and restaurants
Retailers are open and many run Veterans Day sales. A long list of restaurant chains offer free or discounted meals to veterans and active-duty members with ID on Nov. 11; our separate guide will list them as chains confirm their 2026 offers.
Why the date does not move
Unlike Thanksgiving or Memorial Day, Veterans Day is always Nov. 11, marking the 1918 armistice that ended World War I. When it falls on a weekend, the federal observance shifts to the nearest weekday; in 2026 it is a Wednesday, so there is no shift.
